Bursa Injections

Bursa injection at Progressive Integrated Healthcare Dallas Family Medicine and Nurse Practitioner

A bursa, or bursae, is a gel-filled sac located between bones, muscles, and tendons to prevent friction. It acts as a cushion that helps muscles and tendons glide smoothly over bones, without irritation. Bursae can be found in knees, elbows, hips, shoulders and other parts of the body.

When bursae get swollen, or inflamed, it causes joint pain. Bursa injection can help soothe joint pain caused by a swollen bursae, which can be due to arthritis, bursitis and other painful inflammatory diseases. One common treatment for bursa pain in your shoulder, elbow, and knees is a steroid injection. Dr. Adams at Progressive Integrated Healthcare of Dallas injects a steroid solution into your bursa to reduce pain and inflammation. A steroid medication injected into your bursa can help reduce the inflammation and alleviate the pain, as well as improve mobility and flexibility.

How Bursa Injection Works

Bursa injection at Progressive Integrated Healthcare Dallas helps joint pain family wellness and nurse practitioner

Dr. Adams at Progressive Integrated Healthcare of Dallas has many years of experience treating bursa pain with injections. After prepping the area, Dr. Adams will inject a steroid solution with lidocaine to numb any pain directly into the bursa. The procedure is a very quick and painless process in which there’s no recovery downtime. You will be able to go about your day immediately after the bursa injection—with significantly reduced pain and discomfort.

Bursa Injection for Joint Pain

After a bursa injection, your joint pain will improve significantly within that half hour. Results vary among individuals. Some patients feel pain relief within the first 30 minutes, others within several hours. Other patients may need more than one bursa injection treatment to fully reduce their pain, discomfort, and inflammation. The lidocaine within the steroid injection also plays a role in reducing the joint pain. After a few days, the steroid injection will start to reduce the inflammation and drastically improve joint function.

The duration of the bursa injection varies for each individual. For some patients, the benefits are permanent. Other patients may require multiple injections over several months—or years—to fully eliminate bursa joint pain. Dr. Adams at Progressive Integrated Healthcare of Dallas will determine the cause of your bursa joint pain and treat it with a combination of injections and physiotherapy.

Bursa Injection is Safe

Bursa injections for bursitis pain is a very safe and minimally-invasive procedure that requires almost no downtime. There are virtually no risks associated with a bursa injection treatment, and patients can return home or to work right after leaving our office. Certain patients may experience bruising or swelling, but these side effects subside within a matter of hours.

After a Bursa Injection

Fortunately, there is virtually no recovery period or downtime after a bursa injection for joint pain. After you leave our office, you can continue your daily regimen almost immediately. There are no diet restrictions, and no required medicine. However, we recommend avoiding any vigorous exercise or strenuous activity for at least 24 hours after the bursa injection. After 24 hours, the patient may completely return to their normal daily activities. Bursa injections are a great option to treat and reduce joint pain due to bursitis or arthritis, and don’t require any anesthesia. There may be numbness around the injection site for a few hours, but it subsides along with your bursa joint pain. The steroid injection will continue working over the next several weeks and reduce your joint pain long term.
